Lewis D. Sargentich is a Professor at Harvard Law School (HLS), where he has taught since 1973, including the 1L Torts course and advanced courses in jurisprudence and legal theory. His academic focus spans tort law, liberal legality, and constitutional interpretation, particularly emphasizing the First Amendment overbreadth doctrine. He co-authored the widely used casebook Tort and Accident Law: Cases and Materials (5th ed. 2023) and authored the monograph Liberal Legality: A Unified Theory of Our Law (2018).
His research bridges doctrinal analysis and philosophical inquiry, addressing how rule-based reasoning and principles-based reasoning coexist within legal systems. His 1970 Harvard Law Review article on First Amendment overbreadth doctrine remains one of the most cited student-written works in legal history.
Notably absent from the text are explicit mentions of scientific awards, lab affiliations, or student advisement records. His recent publications focus on updating tort law frameworks to address modern challenges, including digital platforms and public nuisance litigation related to opioids and climate change.
