Levin Simon is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University, with affiliations in the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, the Princeton University Center for Human Values, and the Program in Global Health and Health Policy. He previously held the George Moffett Professorship in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (1992–2016) and directed the Center for BioComplexity (2001–present). His research spans theoretical biology, ecology, evolution, mathematics, and environmental economics.
Education: B.A. in Mathematics from Johns Hopkins University (1961), Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland (1964).
Research focuses on mathematical epidemiology, ecological dynamics, and resilience in socio-ecological systems. Notable grants include leadership in projects on pandemic response, environmental stochasticity, and global epidemiology modeling, totaling over $4 million in funding.
Honors include the MacArthur Award (1988), Kyoto Prize (2005), and the U.S. National Medal of Science (2014). He has advised 73 PhD students and 112 postdocs, contributing broadly to interdisciplinary environmental science.
