Simon A. Levin is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University and Director of the Center for BioComplexity within the High Meadows Environmental Institute (HMEI). His work integrates theoretical biology with ecological, evolutionary, and socio-economic systems, focusing on biodiversity, disease dynamics, and the interplay between human behavior and environmental challenges. Levin holds a B.A. from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Maryland.
Research Interests:
- Ecosystem maintenance and macroscopic patterns
- Evolution of diversification and dispersal mechanisms
- Mathematical modeling of ecological and epidemiological systems
- Public goods problems and environmental economics
- Collective behavior and social dynamics
Scientific Awards & Recognition:
- Heineken Prize for Environmental Sciences
- Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences
- Margalef Prize for Ecology
- BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award
- National Medal of Science (USA)
Key Themes in Recent Work: His articles explore adaptive human behavior in epidemics, polarization in collectives, and early warning signals for ecological tipping points. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to address global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss.
Lab & Collaborations: The Levin Lab investigates ecological complexity, socio-ecological systems, and resilience. Notable collaborations include studies on prosocial behavior in heterogeneous societies and the dynamics of disease spread influenced by human decisions.
