Lev Tarasov is a Professor in the Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography at Memorial University in St. John's, NL, Canada. His research focuses on glacial systems modelling, combining ice dynamics, climate interactions, and earth systems. He develops computational models to understand past and future cryosphere behavior, with emphasis on Bayesian calibration for uncertainty quantification.
Research interests include:
- Probability distributions for future Greenland/Antarctic ice sheet evolution
- Meltwater impacts on climate systems
- Drivers of glacial cycles and climate feedbacks
- Phase space analysis of glacial climate systems
- Human migration due to sea-level rise
He leads the Glacial Systems Model (GSM) development, featuring thermo-mechanical ice-sheet modelling, bedrock deformation, subglacial hydrology, and climate coupling. Current projects include PALMOD (Modelling Complete Glacial Cycles) and MOCA (Meltwater routing network).
He actively advises graduate students and collaborates internationally with institutions like University of Bergen, Oregon State, and Durham University. His research group works on coupled ice-climate modelling, Bayesian calibration, and deglacial reconstruction.
