Dr. Leslie S. Rush serves as the Wyoming Excellence Chair in Literacy Education at the University of Wyoming’s College of Education, School of Teacher Education. Her career spans teaching secondary English in Uganda, California, and Texas, alongside academic leadership roles. She holds a Ph.D. in Reading Education from the University of Georgia (2002), an M.Ed. from Texas A&M University-Commerce (1996), and a B.A. in History and English (1984).
Her research focuses on disciplinary literacy in English Language Arts (ELA), teacher education practices, and strategies for effective literacy instruction. Key interests include vocabulary development, writing pedagogy, and bridging literary theory with classroom practice. She has published widely in journals such as Harvard Educational Review and Journal of Literacy Research, emphasizing methodologies for enhancing student interpretive skills and fostering equitable educational environments.
Rush collaborates with Wyoming school districts on professional development initiatives, emphasizing disciplinary literacy and antiracist practices. She has co-edited English Education and is active in organizations like the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and Literacy Research Association (LRA). Her work bridges theory and practice, advocating for teacher well-being in rural contexts and innovative curriculum design.
Her teaching spans courses like Theoretical Perspectives on Writing and Teaching Literacy in Elementary Schools, reflecting her commitment to preparing educators for contemporary challenges. Professional affiliations include English Language Arts Teacher Educators (ELATE), and she engages in outreach to improve literacy education statewide.
