Lesley Emerson is a Lecturer at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work and the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. She holds leadership roles including Deputy Director of the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Module Coordinator for Social Science pathways. Her expertise spans political education, children's rights, and participatory research methods.
Education: Emerson holds an EdD and is involved in teaching modules on citizenship education and qualitative research methods. Current projects include 'Votes at 16' (UK-wide deliberative study on youth political engagement) and 'ConCitizen' (an Erasmus+ project on teaching controversial issues).
Research focuses on children’s participation rights, civic education, and wellbeing. She has supervised over 10 doctoral students, examining topics like refugee children’s experiences, school exclusion, and human rights education. Emerson contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions).
Her work has informed policy through collaborations with organizations like Save the Children and UNICEF. Recent activities include invited talks on post-conflict education curricula and external examining roles in Social Science PGCE programs.
