Leonora Neville is a Professor of Byzantine History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, holding the John W. and Jeanne M. Rowe Chair. She specializes in medieval eastern Mediterranean history, with a focus on the Byzantine Empire (9th–12th centuries) and its late antique roots. Her work examines gender, civic religion, and historical memory in Byzantine political culture. She earned a Ph.D. from Princeton University (1998) and a B.A. from Yale University (1992).
Her research has been recognized with awards like the Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professorship (2016) and the Dumbarton Oaks Bliss Prize Fellowship (1992–1994). She has advised multiple graduate students and authored influential books including Byzantine Gender (2019) and Anna Komnene: The Life and Work of a Medieval Historian (2016). Her TED-Ed videos, such as The Rise and Fall of the Byzantine Empire, highlight her public engagement with historical scholarship.
