Dr. Leo Z Liao is a Senior Lecturer at the Te Piringa Faculty of Law, University of Waikato, New Zealand. He holds dual legal qualifications from Renmin University of China (RUC) and the University of Auckland, including a PhD in Law. His career spans over 25 years in legal practice in China and New Zealand, specializing in commercial law, tax law, and cross-cultural legal issues. He currently serves as Convenor of International Engagement (China) and supervises PhD/MPhil students.
Dr. Liao’s research focuses on comparative law between China and common law jurisdictions, contract law, property law, and the cultural dimensions of legal transactions. He has published extensively in journals like SISU Law Review and Asia Pacific Law Review, analyzing topics such as contractual interpretation, fiduciary obligations in asset management, and cultural influences on familial disputes.
As an expert witness, he has provided Chinese legal and cultural expertise in New Zealand courts, notably in high-profile cases involving cross-border commercial disputes. His teaching spans contracts, land law, and banking/finance law at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
