His work examines how the sociology of culture—the production, transmission, and consumption of beliefs and practices—has shaped both the boundaries of China and how China itself has been historicized.
His primary research interests include:
- Cultural History of China
- Historiography of China
- Identity Formation in the Sinophone World
- Later Imperial China
- Modern Chinese History
- Hong Kong Studies
Dr. Shin teaches courses on Chinese history in a global context, including "China in World History" (ASIA 270), which examines how China has changed the world and how engagement with the world has changed China from earliest times to the present.
His research bridges Chinese history, cultural studies, and global history, contributing to interdisciplinary understandings of Chinese identity and historical development.
