Leniqueca Welcome is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology and International Affairs at The George Washington University, affiliated with the Elliott School of International Affairs. A multimodal anthropologist and designer from Trinidad and Tobago, her work bridges traditional ethnographic methods with photography and collage.
- Education: Ph.D. in Anthropology (2021) with certificates in Urban Studies and Experimental Ethnography from the University of Pennsylvania; B. Arch in Architecture (2013) from the University of Arkansas.
Her research focuses on processes of racialization, securitization, and criminalization in Trinidad and The Americas, examining colonial technologies of anti-blackness and their ethical-juridical implications. Her forthcoming book, Come Out of This World: Beyond Terrains of Criminalization to Where Life is Precious, interrogates the figure of the violent criminal in constructing and troubling humanity, care, and justice.
Her recent publications explore themes such as Blackness, sovereignty, multimodal methodologies, and the infrastructures of liberation. Articles span topics like disaster in the Caribbean, coloniality of the gaze, and affective dimensions of criminalization.
She teaches courses including ANTH 6591: Sovereignty, integrating her interdisciplinary expertise in anthropology and international affairs.
