Leng Chee Chang is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, University of Hawaii at Hilo, with additional affiliation to the Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science (TCBES) program. His research bridges natural products chemistry and pharmacological applications of tropical plants.
- B.Sc. in Chemistry from University of Malaysia Sabah
- M.Sc. from University of Malaysia Sabah
- Ph.D. in Natural Products Chemistry from University of Illinois at Chicago
Dr. Chang specializes in isolating bioactive compounds from tropical plants for drug development targeting infectious diseases, inflammation, and cancer. His work focuses on phytochemical characterization and mechanism-of-action studies.
Recent publications highlight his exploration of Garcinia xanthochymus, Physalis peruviana, and other tropical species, with a consistent emphasis on bioactive benzophenones, withanolides, and kinase inhibitors. His research spans pharmacognosy, medicinal chemistry, and molecular pharmacology.
- Honors: Phi Kappa Phi, Rho Chi Honor Society, Kilmer Prize, TOY Award
- Awards: Van Doren Scholar, D. John Faulkner Travel Award, Excellence in Scholarly Activities Award
He has secured grants from the Hawaii Community Foundation and USDA for evaluating natural products, including a 5-year USDA project on tropical plant bioactives. His collaborations include provisional patents with Dr. John Pezzuto and Dr. Juri Turkson.
