Lena Tambs is a Postdoctoral Researcher and Grant-funded academic at the University of Helsinki, specializing in Egyptology and Network Analysis. She serves as a Supervisor for the Doctoral Programme in History and Cultural Heritage and is affiliated with the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires (ANEE). Tambs is also a key participant in the Helsinki University Egyptology Study Group and holds roles in international research networks like The Connected Past.
Her research focuses on the intersection of social and economic history in Ptolemaic Egypt (3rd–2nd century BCE), utilizing network analytical methodologies to decode complex interactions in ancient archives such as the Zenon Archive. She investigates bilingual communities, symbolic boundaries, and the dynamics of interpersonal relationships in ancient Mediterranean and Middle Eastern contexts.
Tambs has led projects like Interpersonal Relationships in Early Ptolemaic Egypt (2021–future) and co-created datasets on socio-economic networks in Pathyris. She actively contributes to academic discourse through invited talks, conference organization (e.g., Ancient Egyptian Networks), and editorial work, including co-editing A Bridge too Far (2024), a multidisciplinary network analysis anthology.
