Melanie Wasmuth is a Docent in Egyptology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the University of Helsinki, with a focus on socio-cultural history and cross-regional migration in the ancient world. She serves as Vice-leader of Team 2 (Social Scientific Theory and Applications) within the Centre of Excellence in Ancient Near Eastern Empires (ANEE) and acts as Principal Investigator for the MIGREIA project (2021–2023), funded by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung.

Her research spans socio-cultural history, epigraphics, iconography, and digital humanities, with a strong emphasis on source-oriented methodologies. Recent publications examine Bourdieusian habitus theory, Alexander historiography, and Egyptian migration patterns to Assur. She has received a major research scholarship from the Gerda Henkel Stiftung for her work on cross-regional mobility.
Wasmuth leads the Egyptology Study Group at the University of Helsinki and collaborates internationally, particularly with Basel University. Her teaching philosophy prioritizes student-driven source analysis and interactive pedagogy, preparing students for independent research and knowledge dissemination.
