Lena Näre is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Helsinki, Finland, holding a D.Phil. in Migration Studies from the University of Sussex (2009) and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Helsinki (2012). She is affiliated with the Diversity in Society and Life (DIVSOL) and Helsinki Inequality Initiative (INEQ). Her roles include supervising doctoral programmes in Gender, Culture, and Society, and in Social Sciences. She serves as Vice-Head of the Sociology discipline and previously held leadership positions in the European Sociological Association. Näre is Editor-in-Chief of the Nordic Journal of Migration Research and an Associate Editor of Global Social Challenges Journal.
Her research focuses on care labour, migration, gender, and social inequality, with projects such as the Nordic consortium 'Tackling Precarious and Informal Work in the Nordic Countries' (2022–2026) and 'Struggles over Home and Citizenship' (2018–2021). She has led over 12 projects funded by institutions like the Kone Foundation and the Academy of Finland.
Notable achievements include awards for articles in Sosiologia (2014, 2020) and the 2007 Graduate Essay Prize. Her work critiques neoliberal welfare dynamics, migrant rights, and bureaucratic bordering, with extensive publications in journals like Ethnic and Racial Studies and Men and Masculinities.
Näre has actively participated in 443+ academic activities, including editorial roles, conference organization, and doctoral supervision. She engages in public discourse via media commentary on migration policies and asylum seeker rights.
