Lena Henningsen is a Junior Professor for Chinese Studies at the University of Freiburg, Germany, affiliated with the Institute of Sinology. Her academic career includes a PhD from Heidelberg University (2008) and a Habilitation in Chinese Studies (2019). She has held fellowships such as the Amalie Baur Fellowship (2017-2018) at TU Munich and secured an ERC Starting Grant (2017) for research on reading politics in China. Her research focuses on modern Chinese literature, cultural revolution manuscripts, digital humanities, and intellectual property issues.
Her work explores unauthorized reading/writing practices during the Cultural Revolution, global literary circulation, and adaptations of Western literature in China. Notable contributions include analyses of hand-copied fiction (shouchaoben), Harry Potter adaptations, and coffee consumption as cultural authenticity markers.
Henningsen has authored/co-edited books like Cultural Revolution Manuscripts (2021), Copyright Matters (2010), and contributed to journals such as Modern Chinese Literature and Culture. She is a member of the Young Academy and leads the READCHINA research project. Academic activities include editorial roles, international conferences, and collaborations with institutions like the MCLC Resource Center.
