Leila Weefur (He/They/She) serves as a Lecturer in the Art Practice program at Stanford University. Based in Oakland, California, Weefur is an accomplished artist, writer, and curator whose interdisciplinary practice explores the complexities of identity and belonging through innovative video installations and written works, contributing actively to Stanford's academic arts community.
Central to Weefur's artistic inquiry is an examination of performativity within systems of belonging, weaving together themes of sensorial memory, abject Blackness, hyper surveillance, and the erotic. This multifaceted approach positions their work at the critical juncture of contemporary visual arts, performance studies, and Black feminist thought, challenging conventional narratives on race, gender, and power dynamics.
Weefur's contributions to the arts have been acknowledged through significant accolades:
- Recipient of the Walter & Elise Haas Creative Work Fund
- Awarded the MSP California Black Voices Project grant
Professionally, Weefur has engaged with leading cultural institutions including The Wattis Institute, McEvoy Foundation for the Arts, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, SFMOMA, Museum of the African Diaspora, and Smack Mellon. Their scholarly writings have been featured in notable publications such as SEEN by BlackStar Productions, Sming Sming Books, and Baest Journal, establishing a critical voice in contemporary art discourse.
