Prof. Dr. Leila Tarokh is a Professor at the University of Bern, affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry within the Medical Faculty. Her research focuses on sleep neurophysiology and its role in mental health, particularly in adolescents with psychiatric disorders. She leads grants investigating sleep in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) and transdiagnostic links between sleep and psychiatric conditions. She holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of California, Irvine, and has held roles at Brown University and the University of Zurich.
Educations:
- PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, University of California, Irvine (2006)
- NIAAA Postdoctoral Fellowship, Brown University (2006-2009)
Research Interests: Leila Tarokh’s work employs multimodal approaches, including high-density EEG, to study sleep’s role in mental health. Key areas include sleep spindle alterations in neurodevelopmental disorders, sleep-wake behavior in adolescents, and the neurophysiological basis of psychiatric conditions. Her studies highlight sleep’s impact on depression, schizophrenia, and stress resilience.
Grants & Advising:
- Principal Investigator: Two grants examining sleep in MDD and transdiagnostic psychiatric links
- Advising: Collaborates with teams on behavioral interventions and closed-loop sleep modulation therapies
Labs/Teams: Leads the Sleep and Psychiatry research group at the University Clinics UPD, focusing on translational sleep medicine and neurophysiological biomarkers for mental disorders.
