Leidy Klotz is a Professor at the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, specializing in the intersection of engineering and behavioral science to address sustainability challenges. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored the book Subtract. His work focuses on leveraging behavioral insights to improve infrastructure design, education, and policy.
Education: B.S. Lafayette College, M.S. University of Washington, Ph.D. Penn State. Klotz’s research spans sustainable engineering, behavioral science, and design, emphasizing solutions that balance technical, social, and environmental dimensions. He has secured over $10 million in competitive grants, including an NSF CAREER Award and an NSF INSPIRE grant.
Key initiatives include co-founding the Convergent Behavioral Science Initiative and advising decision-makers at institutions like the Department of Energy and the World Bank. He teaches courses such as Sustainable Energy Innovation and has advised 21 Ph.D. students, many of whom now hold academic and industry leadership roles. Awards include recognition as one of 40 under-40 inspiring professors and a University of Virginia Research Award.
