Dr. Leeann Lane is an Associate Professor in History at the School of History and Geography, Dublin City University. She holds a PhD from Boston College, alongside a research MA and BA from University College Cork (UCC). Her research focuses on modern Irish history, specializing in 19th- and 20th-century gender and women's history. She examines women's roles in the Irish revolutionary period, particularly those opposing the 1921 Treaty, and their navigation of restrictive post-independence policies. Dr. Lane is also interested in marital status dynamics in early 20th-century Ireland, analyzing societal pressures from the State and Catholic Church.
Her recent work includes a 2025 biography of Mary MacSwiney and contributions to studies of Irish cultural revival and suffrage movements. In 2012, she was appointed to the Taoiseach’s Expert Advisory Group on the Decade of Centenaries. Dr. Lane’s teaching and research reflect a commitment to uncovering marginalized voices in Irish history, emphasizing biographical approaches to understand societal change.
