Dr Lee Nelson is a Reader in Sports Coaching at Edge Hill University, leading the Practice in Coaching and Teaching Research Group and chairing the Department Athena Swan Action Group. Previously, he worked at the University of Hull (2009-2014) as a Lecturer in Sports Coaching and Performance. He holds a PhD (2010, Loughborough University), MSc Sports Coaching (2004, Brunel University), and BSc Sport & Exercise Science (2003, University of Bedfordshire). A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, his research focuses on critical social analysis of sports work, qualitative methods, and dramaturgical frameworks.
His work explores how sports workers navigate organizational life, with publications on emotion, policy enactment, and video-based coaching practices. Co-editor of Routledge books like Community Sport Coaching (2022) and Emotions in Sport Coaching (2018), he serves as Associate Editor for Sports Coaching Review and Editorial Board Member for International Sport Coaching Journal. Teaching responsibilities include BSc Sports Coaching and MSc Sport, Physical Activity & Mental Health programs.
Notable awards include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Active in national/international collaborations, his recent projects include a funded MRes studentship on performance analysis at Saint Helens RLFC (2025-2026).
