Lee Jeong-won is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University, where he has served since March 2013. He is also a Full Member of the Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST) since 2021, and previously served as an Associate Member from 2010 to 2020. He has held leadership roles including Deputy Director of the Institute of Comprehensive Pharmacy (2015–2021) and Head of the Department of Pharmacy (2011–2013).
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Chemistry, College of Agriculture, Seoul National University (1982–1986)
- Master's degree in Agricultural Chemistry, Graduate School of Agricultural Chemistry, Seoul National University (1986–1988)
- Master of Science in Biochemistry, University of Tennessee, USA (1992–1995)
- Ph.D. in Pharmacology, University of North Carolina, USA (1996–2000)
His research is centered on the functional role of TM4SF5, a tetraspanin protein, in liver diseases, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). He investigates immune-metabolic regulation, TM4SF5-mediated immune checkpoint pathways, and therapeutic targeting of TM4SF5 using small molecules and antibodies.
His work spans the development of diagnostic platforms for TM4SF5-related liver diseases, the use of gene-engineered animal models, and the exploration of clinical relevance of TM4SF5 in human liver pathology. His lab, the Regulation of Cellular Functions Laboratory, is housed within the College of Pharmacy at Seoul National University.
Scientific Awards and Honors:
- Full Member, Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2021–Present)
- Associate Member, Korean Academy of Science and Technology (KAST), Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2010–2020)
Administrative & Service Roles:
- Member, Biosafety Committee, Seoul National University (2016–Present)
- Deputy Director, Institute of Comprehensive Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy, SNU (2015–2021)
- Head, Department of Pharmacy, College of Pharmacy, SNU (2011–2013)
His lab actively collaborates with international and domestic research groups and continues to lead in the development of next-generation therapeutics for liver diseases targeting TM4SF5. His research is supported by national grants and institutional funding, and he has trained numerous graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in pharmacology and cancer biology.
