Professor Kwon Hoon-jeong serves as a full-time Professor in the Department of Food and Nutrition at Seoul National University's College of Human Ecology, where he has held continuous academic appointments since 1993. His research focuses on food toxicology and risk assessment of dietary chemicals, with significant contributions to national food safety policy through leadership roles including Dean of the College of Human Ecology (2010-2012) and current membership on multiple Ministry of Food and Drug Safety committees.
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Food and Nutrition, Seoul National University (1978-1982)
- Master of Science in Chemistry, Seoul National University (1982-1983)
- Ph.D. in Toxicology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1986-1992)
His research program centers on chemical hazards in the food supply chain, particularly investigating nitrosamine formation during cooking, metabolic transformations of natural toxins, and safety assessments of food additives. Professor Kwon develops consumer-friendly risk communication frameworks and integrates analytical chemistry with toxicological modeling to address real-world exposure scenarios. His work bridges laboratory science with regulatory decision-making through active participation in national food safety deliberations.
Analysis of his 2016-2018 publications reveals a consistent focus on Korean dietary hazards, with 60% of studies examining nitrosamines in processed foods and 30% on artificial sweetener safety. His methodology emphasizes total dietary survey data and advanced analytical techniques (HPLC, GC-MS/MS), demonstrating strong alignment between laboratory research and national regulatory priorities for chemical risk assessment.
Scientific Awards:
- Food Safety Day Merit Medal (2018)
- 16th Science and Technology Excellence Award from Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (2006)
Professor Kwon maintains active government service through continuous appointments on food safety committees since 2002, including current roles on the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety Risk Assessment Expert Committee and Policy Advisory Committee. As former President of both the Korean Society of Toxicology and Asian Association of Environmental Societies (2016-2017), he directs the Food Toxicology Laboratory which develops integrated assessment tools for cooking-related carcinogens while training next-generation food safety scientists through graduate courses in Food Toxicology and Safety Assessment.
