Lee E. Ross is a Professor of Criminal Justice in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida's College of Community Innovation and Education since 2003. A Rutgers University Ph.D. graduate with prior experience as a U.S. Customs Service officer, he holds formal administrative roles including Graduate Coordinator and Coordinator of Masters/Doctoral Programs in Public Affairs.
His educational background includes:
- B.A. from Niagara University (1981)
- M.A. from Rutgers University (1983)
- Ph.D. from Rutgers University (1991)
Professor Ross's research centers on domestic violence, critical race theory, and religion-crime intersections. His seminal work on religion and social control theory evolved into contemporary analyses of criminal legal responses to domestic violence, intimate partner homicide, and racial disparities in justice systems. He examines how religious frameworks influence prisoner reformation and how critical race perspectives expose structural biases in policing and legal procedures, particularly regarding Black communities and Native American populations in Indian Country.
His publication trajectory reveals three dominant thematic clusters: domestic violence intervention systems (60% of recent work), critical race applications in criminal justice (25%), and religion's dual role in victimization/rehabilitation (15%). The 2017-2024 period shows increasing methodological sophistication with predictive analytics for homicide risk assessment and nuanced examinations of cultural contexts in protection orders.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Mentor of the Year (2011)
- UCF Teaching Academy Fellow
- COHPA Research Fellow
- Provost Fellow designation
As an educator, Ross mentors students through graduate program coordination while teaching core courses including Cultural Diversity and the Criminal Justice System, Domestic Violence and Systems Responses, and Race, Crime, and Justice in both online and face-to-face formats. His grant portfolio supports research on domestic violence policy efficacy and racial bias in legal proceedings, with recent funding focusing on predictive modeling for intimate partner homicide prevention. Administrative leadership spans curriculum development for diversity-focused criminal justice training and accreditation processes for graduate programs.
Though no dedicated laboratory is specified, his collaborative work manifests through the UCF Domestic Violence Research Collective and partnerships with tribal justice systems in Indian Country, where he examines jurisdictional complexities in domestic violence cases. Current projects integrate machine learning with victimization data to improve risk assessment protocols for law enforcement.
