Ms Leah Owen is a Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the School of Social Sciences, Swansea University. Her research focuses on security threat perception, examining how states and institutions respond to perceived dangers through policy, militarisation, and structural violence.
- Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Her work bridges genocide studies with contemporary issues of climate securitisation, exploring reactionary movements that weaponise xenophobia and militarised borders against climate-displaced populations. She investigates:
- Securitisation of climate change
- Perpetrator mobilisation in mass violence
- Archival analysis of international institutions
Recent publications address AI's educational implications and historical war crimes jurisprudence. Leah supervises MA students on topics including UN peacekeeping coherence and intervention typologies, collaborating across disciplines with colleagues like Dawn Bolger and Caner Sayan. She works with the Reactionary Politics Research Network at University of Bath on climate security policy analysis at Frontex.
