Layal Ftouni is an Assistant Professor of Gender Studies and Critical Theory at the Graduate Gender Programme, Department of Media and Cultural Studies, Utrecht University. She is also a research affiliate at the Institute of Cultural Inquiry (ICON) and a core faculty member actively supervising MA, RMA, and PhD dissertations. Her work intersects critical theory, gender studies, Palestine studies, political theory, and critiques of human rights frameworks.

Research focuses on reproduction of life (human/environmental) in Palestine under settler colonialism, funded by a NWO VENI grant (2022-2025). Her work addresses biopolitics, decolonial futures, and the ethics of survival.
Scientific awards include the VENI grant, Global Visiting Scholar at NYU, and multiple scholarships/grants from ACSS, AHRC, UEL. She co-founded the Arab Cultural Studies Group and serves on the editorial board of Lateral, a peer-reviewed open-access journal.
Advising and grants highlight her mentorship of graduate students and leadership in the Dutch Scholars for Palestine network. Her publications span colonial violence, feminist epistemologies, and the politics of art and resistance.
