Dr. Renée Vulto is an Assistant Professor of Intangible Cultural Heritage at Utrecht University's Department of History and Art History (Humanities). Her research focuses on sound's role in historical contexts of conflict, colonialism, and identity. She holds a PhD in Literary Studies from Ghent University and combines methods from emotion history, sensory history, and digital humanities. Current projects include Sound of Oppression and Subversion, examining Dutch colonial sound politics in the Caribbean. Co-founder of the Song Studies Network, she also serves on the board of Camerata Trajectina and Utrecht Centre for Early Modern Studies.
Education: BA Musicology (University of Amsterdam), RMA Musicology (Utrecht University), PhD Literary Studies (Ghent University). Teaching includes courses on cultural heritage, media history, and postcolonial cultures in BA History and MA Cultural History programs.
Research interests span early modern Dutch revolutionary song culture, postcolonial music theory, and the intersection of sound studies with colonial history. She contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives like Institutions for Open Societies and Pathways to Sustainability programs.
