Lawrence Venuti is a Professor of Translation Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia and a Guest Professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz during the 2009 Summer Semester. A globally renowned scholar, his work focuses on translation theory, ethics of difference, and the history of translation. Key publications include The Translator’s Invisibility: A History of Translation (1995) and The Scandals of Translation: Towards an Ethics of Difference (1998). He edited The Translation Studies Reader (2000), a foundational text in the field. Venuti’s research extends to intertextuality and the cultural implications of translation, with articles published in leading journals like the Harvard Advocate and Yale Journal of Criticism.
During his time at Mainz, he conducted seminars and colloquia for students and young academics at the School of Applied Linguistics and Cultural Studies, alongside public lectures on topics such as Saint Jerome’s translation theories and contemporary intertextuality. His editorial roles include advisory and editorial board memberships with Palimpsestes, Reformation, and Translation Studies.
