Dr. Lawrence Layman is a physician-scientist and Professor at Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia. He holds dual appointments in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Reproductive Endocrinology, Infertility, and Genetics), Physiology, and Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine. He serves as the Greenblatt Distinguished Chair in Endocrinology and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
His research focuses on the genetics of puberty, uterine and vaginal development, and reproductive endocrinology. His work bridges clinical genetics with genomic analysis of rare diseases, including neurodevelopmental and Mullerian developmental disorders.
Dr. Layman’s recent publications highlight trends in genomic interrogation of syndromic conditions (e.g., Sotos syndrome), hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, and Mullerian aplasia, utilizing technologies like optical genome mapping and bioinformatics.
- Scientific Awards:
- Elected into the Association of American Physicians (2019)
- Augusta University Medical Student Teaching Award (2018)
- Best Doctors in America (2018)
- Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (2015)
As a mentor, Dr. Layman teaches graduate courses including Metabolic Endocrine Disease and Obstetrics and Gynecology Research, while leading NIH-funded studies such as the R01 grant on the genetics of Mullerian development (NICHD, 2018). His work integrates clinical practice and genomic research to address complex reproductive and developmental disorders.
