Lawrence King is Professor of Economics and Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, with affiliations in both the Department of Economics and Department of Sociology. His research examines how large-scale economic transformations affect population health, particularly focusing on post-communist countries and structural adjustment policies.
His core research investigates the intersection of political economy and public health, including:
- Mortality crises during economic transitions
- IMF policy impacts on health systems
- Privatization and social inequality
- Global health governance
King's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on socioeconomic determinants of health across diverse contexts. Recent work examines how austerity measures, privatization policies, and global financial institutions influence health outcomes in vulnerable populations.
He has received significant recognition including the 2014 Granovettor Best Paper Prize and ESRC Impact Accelerator Award. His ERC Advanced Grant (€3.48M) supported groundbreaking research on privatization's health impacts across Eastern Europe.
King maintains extensive international collaborations and leads major projects including the Digital Whistleblower (Horizon 2020) and CAPABLE (UK MRC). He advises numerous doctoral students on topics spanning economic sociology, development studies, and health policy.
