Lawrence Hultgren

Dr. Lawrence Hultgren is a Professor of Philosophy at Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU), where he has served for 55 years—the longest tenure of any faculty member. He joined VWU (then Virginia Wesleyan College) in 1969 during its formative years, contributing to its growth from an unaccredited institution to a respected liberal arts college. He founded the philosophy department, emphasizing applied philosophy in science, medicine, government, and commerce. His teaching philosophy focuses on fostering critical thinking, open-mindedness, and social responsibility among students, aligning with Kierkegaard’s existential themes explored in his doctoral work at Vanderbilt University.
