Dr. Joyce Howell is a Professor of Art History at Virginia Wesleyan University (VWU), concluding a 38-year tenure. She began as an adjunct faculty member in 1985 and held leadership roles, including chairing the accreditation committee, Honor Council, and SACSCOC committees. Her expertise spans art history, with a focus on art education and studio instruction. Howell earned degrees from the University of Virginia, including a doctorate, and is a Phi Beta Kappa member. She has published extensively, including a collaborative study with her daughter on Bob Ross’ educational TV methods. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes critical thinking and mentoring, described by students as transformative. Beyond academia, she values art museums and lifelong learning.
