Dr. Jill Sturts is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Sport and Recreation Professions at Virginia Wesleyan University. She also serves as Assistant Dean of the Batten Honors College, Chair of the General Education Committee, Faculty Representative to Athletics, and Faculty Team Advisor for the women’s soccer team. Her academic journey includes a B.A. from Baldwin-Wallace University, an M.Ed. from Bowling Green State University, and a Ph.D. from Indiana University.
Dr. Sturts' research focuses on physical activity, competencies in collegiate recreation, and pedagogy within higher education. She has presented at multiple levels and regularly publishes in her field. Notably, she is working on a textbook for program and event planning, delayed during the pandemic but expected to publish within the year. She also explores opportunities for online and master’s-level coursework contributions.
Her professional background includes roles in campus recreation administration, such as overseeing intramurals and programming at Ashland University. She contributes to the academic community through editorial board memberships (e.g., Recreational Sports Journal) and faculty roles in the NIRSA School of Collegiate Recreation.
Dr. Sturts emphasizes collaborative learning environments, integrity in leadership, and student engagement.
