Lawrence J. Altman serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Business School at Avila University, Kansas City, Missouri. He previously held roles as Special Education Lead Attorney and Title IX Coordinator for Kansas City Public Schools, and practiced law in St. Louis County for 34 years. Altman is a member of the Missouri Bar, Kansas City Bar Association, National School Board Association’s Counsel of School Attorneys, and a distinguished member of the American Law Society. He received the Pinnacle Top Professor award in 2019 for his teaching excellence.
Altman earned a B.S. in Physics from Washington University and a J.D. from St. Louis University School of Law. His legal career focused on special education advocacy under IDEA and Section 504, Title IX compliance, and anti-bullying policies. He co-authored two books and over 19 articles addressing legal challenges in education, including bullying prevention, mental health accommodations, and discrimination policies.
His research emphasizes legal frameworks for student safety, with notable contributions to bullying navigation strategies, transgender rights in schools, and racial discrimination analysis. Altman has presented over 39 times on topics like school violence prevention and mental health compliance. He was honored with the Warren Welliver Award for his mentorship in the Missouri Lawyers Assistance Program.
