Laurie O’Higgins is the Euterpe B. Dukakis Professor of Classical and Medieval Studies at Bates College. She holds a distinguished academic background, having studied at Trinity College Dublin and Cornell University, with additional training at UC Berkeley. Her teaching spans Greek and Latin language/literature, Food in Ancient Greece/Rome, and Gender and the Body in Antiquity. Her research focuses on recovering non-elite voices in classical antiquity and Irish classical engagement. She has authored two major works: Women and Humor in Classical Greece (2003) and The Irish Classical Self (2017).
Her expertise spans 18th-century Irish history, classical reception, and Homer. Current projects include a book-length analysis of the Odyssey. She has taught at The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve, and Bates since 1992.
