Laurie Langbauer is a Professor in the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She specializes in British literature of the long nineteenth century, with a focus on juvenile traditions, Romantic-era poetry, and the intersection of childhood and literary production. Her research explores youth in cultural contexts, including the Pre-Raphaelites and Victorian women’s poetry.
Langbauer holds a PhD (1985) and MA (1982) in English from Cornell University, and a BA (summa cum laude, 1976) from Wesleyan University. She is a charter member of the International Society of Literary Juvenilia and serves on the advisory board of Journal of Juvenilia Studies.
Her research interests span depictions of the child, feminist theory, genre theory, and visual culture. Current projects include studies on youth in the Pre-Raphaelites and generational dynamics in Victorian literature.
Langbauer has received numerous awards, including the Philip and Ruth Hettleman Award (1997) and a John E. Sawyer Fellowship (2011-2012). She teaches courses on British literature, children’s fiction, and Victorian studies, and has held fellowships at institutions such as the National Humanities Center and the Institute for Advanced Studies in Edinburgh.
