Laurie Denyer Willis is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Anthropology at the University of Edinburgh, School of Social and Political Science. Her research bridges sensory ethnography with studies of religion, global health politics, and suburban governance, focusing on Brazil, Uganda, and Thailand through collaborative projects like Antimicrobials In Society (AMIS). She co-directs the British Academy-funded Feminist Cities CoLab, examining feminist activism and urban violence in Latin America.
- Education: PhD in Medical Anthropology, McGill University (2018); MSc in Urban Studies and Planning, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Her work explores the intersections of bodies, governance, and capitalism, with a focus on antibiotic resistance (AMR) in African and Southeast Asian contexts and the affective dimensions of Evangelical Christianity in Brazil. Key themes include post-colonialism, racial politics, and the sensory politics of health and religion.
Recent publications analyze antibiotic entanglements in Kampala, the political economy of 'Quick Farming' in peri-urban Uganda, and her book Go with God, which examines suburban Evangelicalism in Rio de Janeiro. Her ethnographic methods prioritize multimodal and sensory approaches to understanding urban life and health practices.
