Professor Laurie Butler serves as Pro-Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), where he has held leadership roles since 2019. Previously, he was Head of the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the University of Reading (2013–2019). He is also a visiting Professor at Tohoku University (Japan) and the University of Reading (UK), and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
His research focuses on nutrition and cognition, ageing, memory and decision-making, and behaviour change, with a particular emphasis on interventions for dementia and chronic health conditions. Recent work includes studies on unclean cooking fuel impacts on health, multimorbidity in older adults, and the efficacy of psychosocial interventions for dementia care.
Key collaborations include the NIDUS (New Interventions for Independence in Dementia Study) project, evaluating tailored support for people with dementia and their caregivers. His global health research spans multiple low- and middle-income countries, addressing issues like dietary patterns, physical activity, and mental health.
He holds a PhD in Psychology (University of Reading, 1998) and a BA in Psychology (University of Reading, 1994). His scholarly contributions include over 100 peer-reviewed articles and systematic reviews across Nutrients, Journal of Affective Disorders, and Frontiers in Psychology.
