Professor Laurent Pech is the incoming Dean of the UCD Sutherland School of Law, effective October 2023, following a three-year term, after which he will hold a continuing appointment as Full Professor of Law. Previously, he was Professor of European Law and Head of the Law and Politics Department at Middlesex University London. His academic roles include Visiting Professorships at Bordeaux University and the CEU Democracy Institute in Budapest. He co-founded The Good Lobby Profs in 2021 and contributed to the EU-funded RECONNECT project (2018–2022). His expertise spans EU Constitutional Law, Judicial Independence, Rule of Law enforcement, and EU external human rights policy.
- Education: PhD from Aix-Marseille University (alma mater), with postdoctoral research in Canada and fellowships at NYU Law.
- Research: Focuses on rule of law backsliding in Poland and Hungary, EU legal frameworks, and judicial independence. He advises on rule of law matters in judicial proceedings and policy.
- Affiliations: Editorial board member of the Hague Journal on the Rule of Law, advisor to NGOs like RECLAIM and GEM-DIAMON, and international advisory board member of RESILIO.
His work critiques systemic threats to the rule of law in EU member states, advocating for stronger EU enforcement mechanisms. He has published over 100 scholarly works, including monographs on rule of law crises and EU legal principles. His recent research addresses Poland’s legal black hole, EU treaty reforms, and the role of chilling effects in suppressing dissent.
