John Morijn is a Professor by special appointment of Law and Politics in International Relations and Assistant Professor of European Human Rights Law at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Law. He holds additional roles as Chair of the Scientific Committee at the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights and a Fellow in Law and Public Policy at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. His research focuses on international law, EU human rights law, and the interplay between EU institutions and member states, particularly regarding judicial independence and democratic backsliding in Poland and Hungary.
Education: LL.B. from Erasmus University Rotterdam, European Law from the College of Europe in Bruges, and a PhD in International Law from the European University Institute (2009). He also participated in the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratization in Venice.
Research Interests: Morijn’s work examines EU legal frameworks, particularly the Charter of Fundamental Rights, judicial independence challenges in member states, and the impact of populism on democratic institutions. He has co-organized conferences such as 'Our Rule of Law' addressing rule-of-law erosion in Poland and Hungary, and contributed to high-profile EU policy debates on media freedom and rule-of-law conditionality.
