Laurence de CARLO

Laurence de CARLO is a full-time Professor at ESSEC Business School, specializing in Urban Planning, Sustainable Development, and Negotiation Theory within the School of Law, Political Science & Society. He holds a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning from Université de Montréal (1994), a Master in Marketing Management from ESSEC (1987), and a Civil and Urban Planning Engineering degree from INSA Lyon (1986).

His career includes roles as Chaired Professor (2014-2019), Associate Professor (1999-2005), and Assistant Professor (1994-1999). He also served as a Visiting Scholar at Harvard University (2001). Key professional activities include founding the CONNECT Centre (2014-2019) and co-chairing the Urban Economy Chair at ESSEC.

Research focuses on negotiation dynamics, participatory democracy, and sustainable urban development. Notable works include analyzing energy cooperatives in the UK, trust in Nordic participatory planning, and teaching negotiation through paradoxes. He has published extensively in journals like Ecological Economics and Negotiation Journal.

Teaching spans courses on urban management, energy transition, and water governance. He has advised numerous Master’s projects and contributed to pedagogical innovations like the Responsible Leadership SPOC module on climate change (2019-2020).
