Laurence Roulleau-Berger

Laurence Roulleau-Berger is an Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS and Director of the International Advanced Laboratory (IAL) 'Post-Western Sociology in Europe and in China' at École Normale Supérieure de Lyon. Her research focuses on urban sociology, economic sociology, migration studies, and post-Western sociological frameworks. She holds a Doctorate in Sociology from Lyon 2 University and has held academic positions across Europe and Asia, including visiting professorships at Peking University and Tongji University in Shanghai.

Her work bridges European and Chinese sociological traditions, emphasizing methodological cosmopolitanism and non-hegemonic knowledge production. Key contributions include pioneering studies on compressed modernity, migration economies, and post-Western theoretical frameworks. She leads major research initiatives like the 'Anthropocene' program exploring environmental risks and urban inequalities across Europe and Asia.

Roulleau-Berger has advised numerous PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, including Li Yong, Marie Bellot, and Béatrice Zani. Her awards include France's National Order of Merit and the Life Fellowship at the Global China Academy. She serves on editorial boards of journals like Socio and Journal of Chinese Sociology.

Her research programs integrate transnational teams from China, Japan, and Europe, addressing contemporary issues like digital work, environmental disasters, and multipolar globalization. Current projects include analyzing Yiwu's non-Western global economic networks and comparing risk sociologies across East Asia and Europe.
