Laurence Picton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet, where he leads the research group Spinal circuits for whole-body motor coordination. His lab investigates how proprioceptive feedback and spinal networks integrate to control locomotion in mammals, employing techniques including patch-clamp electrophysiology, x-ray analysis, and genetic manipulation.
Research interests center on:
- Proprioceptive mechanisms for movement feedback
- Spinal cord motor network organization
- Whole-body biomechanics during locomotion
- Sensorimotor integration in vertebrates
Publications from 2018-2025 demonstrate consistent focus on locomotor circuits across model organisms, with recent work shifting toward mammalian systems. Key thematic clusters include rhythm generation, neural circuit plasticity, and sensory feedback systems.
Scientific awards include:
- SSMF Large Grant 2021
- StratNeuro Start-up Grant
The lab currently includes three team members: two postdoctoral researchers and one research assistant. Funding is provided by the Swedish Research Council, Erling-Persson Foundation, and StratNeuro.
