Abdel El Manira is a Professor of Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet, leading the Neurobiology of Motor Actions research group within the Department of Neuroscience. His work focuses on understanding neural circuits in the brainstem and spinal cord that govern locomotion, particularly in zebrafish models. He holds the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant (2024) and has pioneered techniques like retrograde tracers for studying motoneuron pools. His lab employs state-of-the-art tools to dissect modular spinal circuits controlling movement speed and force.
Key research interests include circuit modules for locomotion, spinal organ proprioception, and the developmental plasticity of motor circuits. Notable articles span from brainstem steering mechanisms (2025) to molecular blueprints of spinal circuits (2024). Collaborators include prominent researchers like Jianren Song and Maria Bertuzzi.
Advising PhD students David Madrid Pulgarín and Leander Mrowka, his lab’s work bridges neurobiology and physiology, with emphasis on zebrafish as a model organism. Funding includes ERC grants and KAW project awards. The group’s discoveries advance motor control principles with implications for human movement disorders.
