Ilya Rybak, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at Drexel University College of Medicine. His career spans over four decades, beginning at the AB Kogan Research Institute of Neurocybernetics (1977-1991) and continuing with roles at DuPont Company (1993-1999) and Drexel University since 1999. He has held visiting appointments at Le Havre University (1993-1994) and currently leads the Laboratory for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience.
Education: PhD in Biophysics from St. Petersburg State University (1988), MS in Electrical Engineering from Odessa Polytechnic University (1975).
Rybak's research focuses on computational modeling of neural control systems, particularly respiratory rhythm generation and locomotor pattern formation. His work bridges experimental and theoretical neuroscience, investigating spinal and brainstem circuits using mathematical models. Key areas include neural mechanisms of breathing, locomotion coordination, and sensorimotor integration in mammals.
His lab collaborates internationally to develop frameworks explaining how cellular and network mechanisms integrate across spatial-temporal scales to produce adaptive motor behaviors. Ongoing projects explore spinal sensorimotor circuit dynamics post-injury and computational models of neuromechanical systems.
Laboratory for Theoretical and Computational Neuroscience: Focuses on understanding neural control of movement through interdisciplinary approaches combining computational models with experimental data from leading labs worldwide.
