Dr. Laurence Chalip is a Professor and Academic Program Co-Coordinator in Recreation Management at George Mason University's School of Sport, Recreation, and Tourism Management, part of the College of Education and Human Development. Previously, he served as Head of the Department of Recreation Sport and Tourism at the University of Illinois. He is a former President of the North American Society for Sport Management and a founding Executive Board Member of the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand. Dr. Chalip has held roles with the International Olympic Committee and lectured at the International Olympic Academy.
Education: PhD, University of Chicago.
Research interests focus on optimizing economic, social, and environmental outcomes through sport programs and events, emphasizing intersections with recreation and tourism. His work explores strategic leadership, governance, policy, and venue management in sport organizations.
Awards include the Distinguished Service Award (Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand) and the Earle F. Zieglar Award (North American Society for Sport Management’s highest honor).
Teaches courses such as Governance and Policy in Sport Organizations, Strategic Leadership, and Sport Operations Management. Affiliated with the Center for Sport Management.
