Dr. Laurence C. Smith is a Professor of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences at Brown University, holding the John Atwater and Diana Nelson University Professorship in Environmental Studies. He previously served as a Professor and Department Chair in UCLA's Department of Geography (1996–2019) and held a joint appointment in Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences. His research focuses on Arctic studies, water resources, satellite remote sensing, and climate change impacts. He has advised over 20 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom hold academic and professional roles globally.
Education: Ph.D. (Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Cornell University, 1996), M.S. (Earth Sciences, Indiana University, 1991), B.S. (Earth Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1989).
Research interests include Arctic development, Greenland ice sheet dynamics, river discharge modeling, and global environmental change. His work has informed climate policy, satellite missions, and international forums like the World Economic Forum. Key achievements include over $9M in research funding, 100+ peer-reviewed publications, and the award-winning book The World in 2050. Notable awards include AGU Fellow (2015), Guggenheim Fellowship (2006–2007), and the Walter P. Kistler Book Award (2011).
Grants and advising span climate modeling, Arctic infrastructure, and remote sensing applications. His lab collaborates internationally, with a focus on interdisciplinary environmental challenges.
