Dr. Jonathan Ryan is an Assistant Professor of Ice and Climate at Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment, leading the Ryan Lab. His research focuses on ice sheet surface processes, coastal sea ice dynamics, and satellite remote sensing (e.g., ICESat-2), with fieldwork in Greenland, Alaska, and Patagonia. He combines drones and satellite data to bridge spatial/temporal scales, addressing melt-albedo feedbacks, supraglacial hydrology, and cryospheric-climate interactions.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Geography, Aberystwyth University (2018)
- M.Phil. in Polar Studies, University of Cambridge (2013)
- B.Sc. in Geography, University of Nottingham (2012)
Research Interests:
- Greenland Ice Sheet dynamics and meltwater production
- Landfast ice changes in Arctic communities
- Drone applications in cryospheric studies
- Climate modeling using satellite data
Grants & Funding:
- NASA grant for ICESat-2 analysis of Greenland Ice Sheet properties
Lab & Team: The Ryan Lab develops innovative methods for observing ice-sheet processes and collaborates with Indigenous communities to study Arctic environmental changes.
