Laurence Allard is a Lecturer in Communication Sciences at the University of Lille and Ircav-Sorbonne Nouvelle. Her research explores the expressive and civic dimensions of digital technologies, with a strong emphasis on techno-feminism and the cultural implications of mobile and networked media. She is actively involved in interdisciplinary scholarship that bridges communication, design, environmental thought, and feminist theory.
Her research interests include:
- Techno-feminism and gender construction through digital media
- Ecology of communication and digital sustainability
- Anthropocene and collapse in design and media studies
- Science and technology studies (STS) with a cultural lens
- Participatory digital practices and citizen engagement
- Mythology and symbolism of everyday technologies
Her recent publications reflect a growing focus on environmental crisis, digital culture, and feminist epistemologies. Notably, her co-edited volume Sciences du design n°11. Anthropocène et Collapse (2019) situates communication design within planetary-scale challenges. She also co-translated Donna Haraway’s seminal Manifeste cyborg (2007), underscoring her foundational role in introducing feminist technoscience to French audiences. Her monograph Mythologie du portable (2010) critically examines mobile technology as cultural artifact.
She co-founded the association Labo Citoyen/Citoyens Capteurs, which promotes citizen-led digital inquiry and participatory sensing. Additionally, she serves as an expert for ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety) in various working groups, indicating applied relevance of her research in public policy and risk communication. She is currently teaching a course titled "Techno-feminist Scenes: Or How Digital Creates Gender" in Spring 2025.
