Brianna I. Wiens is an Assistant Professor specializing in feminist media studies, rhetoric, and digital culture at the University of Waterloo. She holds a PhD from York University and MA/BA degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder and University of Waterloo, respectively. Her research examines how marginalized communities use digital media to resist power structures, with a focus on intersectional feminism, queer perspectives, and technology-facilitated gender violence. Wiens co-directs the Feminist Think Tank, a research collective advancing feminist media and design through projects like the Feminists Do Media digital archive.
Research Interests: Wiens explores rhetorical resistance in digital spaces, feminist methodologies (e.g., 'dwelling' as research practice), and the intersections of technology, misogyny, and mixed-race representation. She advocates for equitable digital practices and amplifies marginalized voices through participatory art and data justice initiatives.
Awards & Grants: Recent recognitions include SSHRC grants (2023, 2022), a Provost Scholarship (2020–21), and the Communication & Media Studies Emerging Scholar Award (2020). Her work bridges academia and activism, emphasizing 'scholarly activism' as a feminist praxis.
Current Projects: Collaborating with Dr. Shana MacDonald on toolkits to combat technology-facilitated gender-based violence and a monograph tracing feminist digital movements from 2013–2023. She also investigates mixed-race representation on Instagram/TikTok and feminist 'utopic refusals' in social media.
Labs & Collaborations: Co-leads the Feminist Think Tank, which produces interdisciplinary research on feminist media and design. Active in digital humanities and participatory art projects addressing social justice.
