Dr. Lauren K. Stewart is Associate Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, affiliated with the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She serves as Director of the Structural Engineering and Materials Laboratory (SEML) and holds a PE license in California.
- B.S. and Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from University of California, San Diego
Her research focuses on experimental and computational methods to study structural responses to natural and manmade hazards. Key areas include Blast Engineering, Mechanical Shock & Impact, and Hazards Engineering, with applications in steel systems, ultra-high performance concrete, and mass timber structures.
Recent research trends involve cross-laminated timber (CLT) for military construction, multi-hazard performance criteria, and finite element analysis of seismic and blast impacts.
- National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow
- US Air Force Summer Faculty Fellow
- 2017 Rising Star in Structural Engineering
- CEE Excellence in Research Program Development Award
Dr. Stewart has advised numerous graduate students, including LTC Kate Sanborn, LTC Marc Sanborn, and Genny Pezzola. Her team has secured grants totaling over $773k for steel diaphragms, UHPC, and concrete shafts research.
The SEML, under her leadership, spans 18,000 sq. ft. and features hydraulic actuators, material characterization equipment, and the Blast, Shock, and Impact Laboratory.
